E17 v E20 - Walthamstow vs Walford - so now we know . . . . .

Lenny Henry criticises BBC diversit
y plans

BBC news online

24 June 2014 13:38

Lenny Henry appearing at the culture, media and sport select committee hearing has criticised BBC diversity plans. This follows Diane Coyle (acting head of the BBC Trust), who commented that the BBC's flagship soap EastEnders is "almost twice" as white as the real east London.

The BBC's audience council in England had compared the population of Walthamstow in east London with Walford, the fictional home of EastEnders.

E20 v E17
Ms Coyle said it would be "daft" for the show to be a "perfect replica" of the real world.
But she added it was "important to ask whether the BBC can do more in its popular output to provide an authentic portrayal of life in modern Britain".
Referring to her comments that she made during a speech at the London School of Economics on Monday, Henry said: "EastEnders is the most ethnically diverse of any soap."
The BBC said: "We agree with the trust that EastEnders has one of the most diverse casts on British television and that it would be daft to suggest that the programme needs to be a perfect replica of a particular postcode."

Save our Cinema: Take Action Now to Tell the Council Vote Yes to a CPO!

Residents have been fighting for over eleven years now to save the EMD Walthamstow Cinema from being turned into a church by the UCKG (United Church of the Kingdom of God). The McGuffin Film Society and the Waltham Forest Cinema Trust have led efforts to restore this building and provide an amazing cinematic and cultural resource in our area. This includes leading the successful campaign to prevent the church being granted planning permission for this purpose. Despite intervention twice now from the Government to support the case for this building to be used for entertainment, the church has as yet not put the building up for sale.

Waltham Forest Council will meet on Tuesday 15th July to decide whether or not to proceed with a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO). This would enable them acquire the EMD cinema from its current owners and so assist the Cinema Trust. Details of the council’s resolution to proceed with a CPO of the EMD can be found on the council’s website.

Please help us win the case for this to happen by emailing your councillors to let them know that you back the CPO. For details of who to email please visit the Save Walthamstow Cinema website. The deadline for comments to the council is Tuesday 1stJuly.
