Chris Robbins - LBWF statement and book of remembrance

With great sadness the death was announced of the Mayor of Waltham Forest, Cllr Chris Robbins CBE. He died on April 5th. In a statement released shortly after, the Labour Group on the Borough Council said:

"Chris Robbins was an exceptional Leader, politician, trade unionist, friend and beloved husband, father and grandfather. A giant of our movement, leading the struggle at Wapping and then winning Waltham Forest from coalition in 2010 and revolutionising the political fortunes of the Labour Party in our borough. He always put residents first. He always thought about the impact of our decisions on every resident. He was brave enough to lead, take tough decisions and always believed in our borough and our political group. He was also kind, sensitive and cared deeply for people - that’s why he had no time for political can't or politics for its own sake. He believed in making change for the benefit of everyone and few people can have made more impact than Cllr Chris Robbins CBE, our Mayor, our beloved friend and colleague who will always be loved and missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone who loved and respected Chris."

He had picked Haven House Hospice, as his charity as Mayor. They are accepting donations at justgiving.com/wfmbf.

'Make Misogyny a hate crime' - where the campaign started

On Wednesday evening last week the Government announced that police forces would be required to record misogyny as a hate crime; several police forces already do, though notably not the Met under Cressida Dick, but now they will all have to. In fact this campaign, started by Walthamstow Labour and Co-operative MP Stella Creasy, has been going for some time. News from the Boundary Commission

The Boundary Commission has published its final recommendations for new electoral arrangements for Waltham Forest Council. These may come into effect for the 2022 local elections. More at 700forwalthamstow

Ballot for the NEC vacancies: starts 19 October, ends 12 November

 As part of the process to decide the names for the NEC OMOV ballot Walthamstow Labour Party recently held an online meeting and ballot of its General Committee. The outcome of that was to nominate the following candidates:

Labour Party members in Walthamstow can expect their ballot papers to be emailed to them in the next few days. They have until 12 November to cast their votes. Those who share an email address with another eligible member, or have not supplied an email address will receive their ballot by post.

Members who joined on or before 24 August 2020 are eligible to participate in the elections, provided their membership was fully paid-up by midnight on Monday 19 October.

Members will only receive a ballot for the elections they are eligible to participate in. A full list of which ballots are open and the eligibility requirements is on the FAQs page here.

Any member who has not received their ballot by Monday 26 October, should get in touch using the online form to request a reissue or ask any other questions. Requests cannot be reissued before this date.

• Deadline to request postal reissue – Thursday 5 November
• Deadline to request email reissue with the Labour Party – Monday 9 November
• Deadline to request email reissue via self-service portal – Thursday 12 November
• Close of ballot – Thursday 12 November, noon
