Cedar's Avenue - 104 years later

Cedar's Avenue 1910
Cedar's Avenue 8th March 2014

The Walthamstow celebrations of International Women's Day 2014 on Saturday included 'Women's Worth' a free event organised by Waltham Forest Women's Network and supported by the local council (borough of Waltham Forest) but began with a parade recreating the Suffragettes' march of 1910, which started in Cedar's Avenue, and yesterday marched via Hoe Street and The Bell corner to the Town Hall.

Any anxiety that such an obscure anniversary might only attract the attention of three people and a cat was dispelled by the hordes turning up - even the stewards' preliminary meeting was something of a crowd. There are some pictures on facebook here, an interesting blog by tweeteranita a former E17 resident now living in Bath, and much comment on twitter - see eg @WWWomenWalk

International Women's Day - on two wheels

London Cycling Campaign is joining in the celebrations: 2014's theme is 'Inspiring Change', and whilst much progress has been made in relation to women's equality, the world is still unequal and this day calls upon everyone to encourage advocacy for women's advancement everywhere, in every way. This topic resonated with us at LCC and not just on the subject of women, but in relation to our entire campaign objectives. In relation to women and cycling, we enlisted the help of some females from a wide variety of backgrounds to talk to us about life as a woman on two wheels. Some of them have even thought about our Space for Cycling campaign - LCC's biggest focus in which to 'Inspire Change' this year. Read the blog post here
