End in Sight for 8 year Footbridge Campaign

Jennette met with Transport for London staff this week to discuss a host of transport issues in North London. Jennette was also advised that the plans for a footbridge between Walthamstow Central and Queens’ Road stations are likely to be signed off any time now. The campaign to have the footbridge erected and create a safe and direct interchange between the two stations has been running since 2003. Jennette also raised concerns about the increasing congestion at Walthamstow Central and the possible implications for passenger safety at the station. Tfl pledged that that this issue would be looked at in further detail.Keep an eye out for further updates on these issues! 

EMD / UCKG planning application decision - a blogger's report

The planning application by the UCKG - current owners of the EMD cinema - to turn the cinema into a church was rejected unanimously last Thursday by the planning committee. The meeting took place in a packed Assembly Room, with hundreds of cinema supporters remaining outside, unable to get in. This blog by Steve Green - who did manage to get in - gives an interesting account of the scene inside. • Monday 16 May holding an appointment only advice surgery for Walthamstow residents (to book a place please call 020 8 521 1223) and participating in the Public Accounts Committee’s session on the Government’s IT structure.
•  Tuesday 17 May attending the next two sessions of the Finance Bill Committee.
• Wednesday 18 May attending the Public Accounts Committee’s session on defence spending. (Please note I will not be attending the local authority planning meeting which will determine the fate of the EMD cinema as I will be attending a funeral service)
• Thursday 19 May participating in the next two sessions of the Finance Bill Committee and then addressing the Colchester Fabian Society.

• Sunday 8 May appearing on the BBC London Politics Show discussing the outcomes of the local elections in England and on Radio Five Live in the evening to discuss the week’s events with Jon Pienaar.

Are the MoneyShop Legal Loan Sharks? Walthamstow Consultation Saturday 14 May 2011

The Money Shop recently took a housing association to the Advertising Standards Authority to be censured for putting out a leaflet warning their tenants about the rates of interest charged by these companies and calling the Money Shop loan sharks in the process. As part of my work on the impact of such high cost credit lenders on our community I want to know if local people think this is fair. That’s why on Saturday 14 May between 12pm until 2pm I will be outside their regional headquarters which are in Walthamstow at 187 Hoe Street (opposite Walthamstow Central Station) asking residents if they think what the Moneyshop do could be called legal loan sharking and, if so, if it should be better regulated to protect the poorest consumers in our society. I will then share the results of this survey with the Moneyshop and ask them to respond to the views expressed. If you would like to join me in helping to conduct this survey, and at the same time raise awareness of our fantastic local credit union which offers affordable credit to those not able to borrow from banks please do get in touch.
