Next week will be the seventh anniversary of the rape and murder in Walthamstow of Michelle Samaraweera. Since 2011 a man charged with this, three other counts of rape and wanted in connection with another five cases, has been avoiding extradition to the UK by living in India. This is one of the most serious cases of sexual violence against women in the UK in recent years.

Despite this, there has been little media or Government attention to challenge the ongoing delays in this matter. That’s why I’m asking all local residents to join me and members of Michelle’s family on Wednesday 1 June at 5pm at the Indian embassy in Central London in an emergency vigil to seek justice for Michelle. Over thirty separate court hearings have now been held on this matter, yet still there has been no progress – we need your help to show that Britain hasn’t forgotten Michelle and we will continue to press for her alleged killer to be brought back here to face a trial. We demand the Indian authorities and British Government prioritise tackling violence against women.

We will be meeting at 5pm outside India House, Aldwych, London WC2B 4NA and all are welcome- please feel free to bring #justice4michelle signs and wear the colour pink as it was Michelle’s favourite colour.

NPF consultation on priority issues for policy development - deadline June 8th

The National Policy Forum of the Labour Party is now consulting on seven priority issues for policy development. Each of these is being led by a Policy Commission whose members are drawn from the Shadow Cabinet, National Executive Committee and the National Policy Forum. Members are invited to post comments on the website and these will be discussed at the full National Policy Forum meeting in July. "Bigotry has no place in a party campaigning for social justice" Stella Creasy MP

Responding to press reports of the suspension of a Labour party member Stella Creasy, the Labour MP for Walthamstow, said she was “very clear that we must show zero tolerance” to antisemitism in the constituency.

She said she would “expect and indeed be calling for the local leadership” to take action over the issue, adding: “Bigotry has no place in a party campaigning for social justice.

“Walthamstow is a diverse and very tolerant community - I’ve lived here for 20 years and it’s really important we be clear that hatred of one group begets hatred of another.

“Bigotry is hatred, and hatred doesn’t help you to have a debate. Those people who suggest otherwise don’t understand the power of bigotry to exclude and disempower people.”

Statement on the suspension of a member of Walthamstow Labour Party for alleged anti-Semitism

Following the suspension on Friday of a member of Walthamstow Labour Party the chair of the Constituency Party said: "An individual member of Walthamstow Labour Party has been suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation by the national party. We condemn anti-Semitism and racism of all kinds but cannot comment further until the Party investigation has concluded."
