As part of our ongoing campaign to tackle the impact of misogyny on society Stella Creasy, MP for Walthamstow is running an online 'bootcamp' to help 'Make misogyny history'.
Recent research shows 64% of women report being sexual harassed in public places. One in three say they take steps on a regular basis to protect themselves, including limiting their own freedom. The number of female homicide victims is at its highest ever rate for fourteen years, and 46% of women around the world report receiving online abuse. Those from minority communities are particularly at risk of assault, abuse and a poor response by public services to their experiences.
We are campaigning to include misogyny in our hate crime legislation because the evidence shows that this approach can help tackle the violence and harassment of women and girls. Making misogyny a hate crime would not create any new crimes. But it would mean that those crimes such as harassment and abuse which are motivated by hostility to women would be recorded as such - helping to detect and prevent them. So too, where a crime has been committed it could lead to harsher sentencing. Already in the UK five police forces are doing this – now we are campaigning to ensure every police force takes this approach.
We need your help to make that happen. This session Stella is joined by The Fawcett Society, Refuge and the Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities. It will cover what the campaign has achieved so far and future opportunities to make progress in changing the law and police policy - whether that be upcoming legislation and elections, or winning over MPs, Peers, Mayors, or Police and Crime Commissioners. Most importantly, this bootcamp is an opportunity to learn what role you can have play in this campaign, using your own energy and passion for this cause and working with others who share your concerns across the country.
The workshop is just 90 minutes long, free to join and open to all (14 years +) but spaces limited - sign up here to book your place. We would love to see you there!
